According to a new Microsoft Threat Intelligence report, threat actors are leveraging generative AI to accelerate attacks, scale their malicious activities, and lower the technical skill required to launch sophisticated campaigns. This adoption is transforming AI into a powerful force multiplier for adversaries.
The report details that hackers are using AI language models for a wide array of tasks. These include crafting convincing phishing lures, translating content to target global victims, summarizing vast amounts of stolen data, and even generating or debugging malicious code. AI is also being used to scaffold scripts and configure attack infrastructure, streamlining processes that were once time-consuming and required deep expertise.
Microsoft emphasizes that while AI handles these technical tasks, human operators remain in full control of strategic decisions, including target selection and final deployment. The company has already observed specific nation-state groups, such as North Korean actors tracked as Jasper Sleet and Coral Sleet, actively incorporating these AI tools into their cyberattacks.
